THE ABBEY OF ST. GALGANO

On OUR CAR OF THE TIME of 05/08/2008

The abbey of St. Galgano is found between Monticiano and Chiusdino, around thirty west kilometers in Siena. The legend narrates that Galgano from Guidotti in 1180 swore to devote to the Peace and as action of faith in Christ hammered the Sword in the rock. From that moment the sword was revered as a crucifix in front of which to pray.
This happened, always according to the legend, in peak in the hill of Montesiepi that rises to the center of the Valley of the river Merse.
Galgano died later in 1181 and four years, in the 1185 Pope Lucio III it declared him Saint. Toward the elegant dle XIII century they came the Cistercensis from the abbey of Squids near Rome but the monastery for all those people was become small therefore the monks recommended by the Bishop of Volterra decided to build the abbey in the underlying valley.
In 1218 it begins the construction of the adjacent to abbey the hermitage of Montesiepi. The economic bonds that the monks knew how to maintain and the imperial and Episcopalian papal privileges made the order powerful and they allowed the construction of an imposing Abbey. With the years the things changed and spiritual, cultural and economic shine suffered a rapids decadence.
From halves the XV century the Commendataris that received incomes from the abbey exploited her/it to loss of the monks, you/they were allowed to decay the farms, Girolamo Vanvitelli her "it plundered" of the precious objects thin to come to sell the roof of the two churches (it was partly of lead).
In 1550 the remained monks were five. In the years to come was tried more times than to make you reestablish other monks, also in different orders but the great church it came entirely abandoned.

Suggestive the nighttime visit, when the whole structure is artificially illuminated. The images that we attach technically are not well you succeed but we have decided to propose you her equally to give you the idea than the visit can be suggestive to this enchanting Abbey.
