The monuments megalitici was erected in different historical epochs by numerous populations. Testimonies of such monuments are found in various geographical areas.
The word "megalitico" it derives from the Greek "mega", great, and "lithos", stone; with such term all those structures are identified built by great stones vertically set on the ground and prepared so that to create circles, alignments or particular constructions.
The why the man heard the necessity to erect these structures you/he/she is today still little note. The megalitismo has very probably had origin from the development of the practice of burial of the corpses and in the tied up rituals to the fertility.
Between Malta and Gozo seven temples megaliticis exist, the most ancient goes up again to 5000 B.C., very before the pyramids in Egypt and thousand years before the monument more famous megalitico of the world, Stonhenge.
